In the heart of our bustling cities, where 75% of global CO2 emissions originate, lies a powerful opportunity for change. Urban areas not only face the challenges of climate change but also reflect deep-rooted inequalities. Many citizens still lack access to essential needs like affordable energy and transportation, further widening the gap within our communities.
JUST Positive Energy Planning Processes (JUST PEPP) aims to address these inequalities. Over 3 years (January 2024-December 2027), we are empowering vulnerable communities to become active participants in achieving climate neutrality goals through co-created solutions that address energy efficiency, flexibility, and low-carbon mobility. We focus on making Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) inclusive and beneficial for residents of disadvantaged areas.
Our main goals are:
- Understanding needs: Developing tools to measure and visualise energy vulnerabilities.
- Creating benefits: Designing frameworks to analyse the socio-economic benefits of PEDs, like job creation and improved living conditions.
- Strategic planning: Co-creating roadmaps for energy transitions in target neighborhoods.
- Testing solutions: Experimenting with PED solutions to ensure they work for vulnerable communities.
- Sharing knowledge: Developing a digital toolbox to help other local governments implement inclusive, energy-positive solutions.
Our approach includes:
- Energy efficiency: Reducing energy demand through building upgrades and retrofits.
- Renewable energy: Installing solar panels and smart energy storage systems.
- Low-carbon transport: Promoting electric vehicles and shared transport options.
JUST PEPP is dedicated to ensuring that all urban citizens and especially vulnerable communities can contribute to and benefit from the transition to sustainable, climate-friendly cities.
